Right Speech - If the intention is to play a useful role in society in order to support oneself and to help others, then the work one does is right . From right speech proceeds right action. Every Speech must be pure and wholesome. Immaculateness is accomplished by expelling pollution, thus we should comprehend what comprises debased discourse.

Speak the truth and is steadfast in truthfulness, truthworthy, dependable, straightforward with others. He reconciles the quarreling and encourages the united. 

He delights in harmony, seeks after harmony, rejoices in harmony, and creates harmony by this words.

His speech is gentle,pleasing,to the ear, kindly, heartwarming, courteous, agreeable, and  enjoyable to many. 

He talks at the best possible time, as per the realities, agreeing what is useful, as indicated by Dhamma and set of principles.

His words merit recalling, convenient, well-contemplated, well-picked and valuable.

Action should likewise be unadulterated.

Similarly as with discourse, we should comprehend what proceeds with tainted activity so we may go without it.

Describing one who practices right physical action the Buddha said "Laying aside the rod and scrod he is careful to harm money, full of kindness, seeking the good of all living creatures. 

Free of stealth ,he himself lives like a  pure  being.

Each person must have a proper way of supporting himself or herself. 

There are two criteria for right livelihood.To start with, it ought not be important to break the five statutes in one's work, since doing so clearly makes hurt others.

However, further, One ought do nothing that urges others to break the statutes, since this will likewise cause hurt.

Neither straightforwardly nor in a roundabout way should our methods for business include damage to different creatures.

Therefore any employment that requires slaughtering, regardless of whether of people or of animals,is obviously not right vocation.

Right Speech Meaning


Selling liquor or other drugs may be very profitable, but even if one abstains from them oneself, the act of selling encourages others to use intoxicants and thereby to harm themselves.

Operating a gambling casino may be very lucrative, but all who come there to gamble cause themselves harm. 

Selling poisons or weapons --arms, ammunition, bombs, missile ---is good business, but it injures the peace and harmony of multitudes. None of these are right livelihood.


Even though a type of work may not actually harm others, if it is performed with the intention that other should be harmed ,it is not right livelihood. 

The specialist who seeks after a scourge and the merchant who seeks after a starvation are not rehearsing right vocation.

Each individual is a citizen.

We meet our commitments to society by the work we do, serving our colleagues in various ways.

As a byproduct of this we get our employment.

Indeed, even a priest, a loner, has his appropriate work by which he acquires the aid he gets :crafted by cleansing his psyche for his great and the advantage of all.

Right Speech 8 Fold Path


If he starts exploiting others by deceiving people, performing feats of magic or falsely claiming spiritual attainments, then he is not practicing right livelihood.

Whatever remuneration we are given in return for our work is to be used for the support of ourselves and our dependents. 

If there is any excess, at least a portion of it should be returned to society, given to be used for the good of others. 

Conclusion -

In the event that the expectation is to assume a valuable job in the public arena so as to help oneself and to help other people, at that point the work one does is correct occupation. In this ways in Buddhism gives the priority to right speech in the real art of living.
